Apparently, your track record of cooking hasn't been like a Chef and since there were outside guest, they needed to help you make things right. Your heart was in the right place and you deserve the right to show them you are this responsible but the timing wasn't right. Next time, do not tell them and you go ahead and prepare the meal all by yourself and then let them enjoy what you fix. As they do, you will know then that the next time you tell them the meal is being fixed by you, they will be happy to let you no matter who else is there.
